A Night In Training

A Night In Training serves as an example of what a spring training could look like. Each training is led by managers and supported by mentors who work to give leaders hands-on experience with skills they will use on trail.

7:00-7:05

  • Gather as a full group and go over the agenda.

7:05-7:20

  • Learn from the mentors how to tie a taut-line hitch knot in home groups. After practicing, teach your fellow group members how to tie it.
    • Home groups are groups of 5-8 leaders and 2-3 mentors; many training activities and discussions are facilitated in home groups.

7:20-8:20

  • Practice facilitation in small groups through a group scenario about managing conflict among BOLTers.
    • In BOLT, we use mock scenarios to gain experience managing challenging situations that we might encounter in a BOLT group or on a BOLT trip.

8:20-8:30

  • Break time!

8:30-8:40

  • Mentors lead an energizer.
    • Energizers help get blood flowing and prepare us to engage with the next activity.

8:40-9:40

  • Mentors and managers teach how to set up a sleeping tarp.
  • Leaders practice setting up the tarps in their home groups.

9:40-10:00

  • Debrief technical skills practice with home groups.
    • “Debriefing” means having a conversation with a deeper awareness of how everyone is participating and how the conversation can be useful in the future.
  • Pulse as a large group.
    • At the end of each training, everyone gathers in a circle to share announcements, gratitude, and updates.
